Kimyô na sâkasu (2005)
Aka : "Strange Circus"
Realisateur : Sion Sono
Cast : Masumi Miyazaki || Issei Ishida || Rie Kuwana || Mai Takahashi || Hiroshi Ohguchi || Reo Matsuo (Fujiko)...
Musique :
Thème : drame
Synopsis : This film is a multi-dimensional tale that is as complex as it is abhorrent. We are witness to both the story told by novelist Takedo, and the real life drama behind the writing of the tale. Strange Circus is a mystery that attempts to find the correlation between truth and fiction. Since the tale is a morbid account of father and daughter incest as well as daughter and mother abuse and murder…any truth behind the tale is bound to be an horrific revelation.
Mon avis : It is always disturbing when a film so artfully directed and so beautifully filmed is so mind numbingly perverse too. Strange Circus is beautiful and disgusting at the same time. Not for everyone, no…but it is a tour de force. So it is recommended, but only for those who feel a need to watch important cinema. Sion Sono went out on a limb with his shocking and brilliant film Suicide Club, I believe he has out-done himself with Strange Circus. This film is more extreme in every sense of the word…and if I may say so, a little easier to follow. I loved it, but it made me feel quite ill throughout.
Tout public : non (beaucoup de scènes difficiles et contenu d'adulte)
Ma quote : 8/10
Screenshots to follow soon |

| Hello Prisoner,
as almost every new proposition, I make some further investigations with the female cast. at least, I've seen nothing with Masumi Miyazaki yet, this is a good occasion to discover her with your movie. but I've noticed the presence of Mai Takahashi who is Kawa-hime in Miike's Yokai daisenso, where she made a strong impresson on me.
as I can see this is a sort of dark story dealing with also dark events of families. sounds nice, sometime ordinary dark things become truly scary horror shows, especially with a director who was the director of the monumental Suicide club.
these are very good points collected before I move a finger to find a release. will do my best to find that in time.

| Hello best chemistry,
Oh my gosh...I did not notice that Mai Takahashi playing Kawa-hime in Miike's Yokai daisenso was the girl in this film! Thank you for pointing that out.
If you are looking for strong female roles, Masumi Miyazaki turns in a stellar performance as the mother / writer in this film. Her IMDB profile shows that this is her first film in 10 years with only a few appearances prvious to her absence. She has a classic Japanese beauty and I was rivited to the screen watching her expressions and well...beauty. A very, very powerful performance. For all the good that this film has to offer, I will always have to add that it is not going to be recommended for most viewers. I find this frustrating as I would like to see the actresses and director get more exposure from this film...probably won't happen though.
I am willing to bet that you will like it a lot. |

| The review website Midnight Eye has a piece on this film where they say "Ero-guro themed productions are lining up to be unleashed onto an unsuspecting audience".
For some time now, this site has been going on about the death of Asian, especially Japanese horror...saying it died a slow pathetic death some five years ago, but nobody noticed. The new method of horror is termed Euro guro, and according to the article Strange Circus is the first of the new breed. I must say that I certainly thought it was unique in almost every aspect, and downright disturbing.
...anyway here is the link to the article.
Now I just have to research what they mean by euro guro...my guess is it's a mix of Japanese sensibilities (which translates to bieng just out and out weird) and european atmosphere...Dario Argento style. That's my guess... |

Actually the term euro-guro doesn't exist, it's ero-guro (erotic grotesque).
| wikipedia wrote: | The typifying element of ero guro visual art is the macabre intermingled with sexual overtones. Often the erotic element, even when not explicit, is merged with grotesque themes and features—somewhat similar to the works of H. R. Giger. Others produce ero guro as a genre of Japanese pornography and hentai involving blood, gore, disfiguration, violence, mutilation, urine, enemas, or feces. (...) Ero guro is also an element of many Japanese horror films and pinku eiga, particularly of the 1960s and 70s, such as Teruo Ishii's Horror of the Malformed Men (江戸川乱歩全集 恐怖奇形人間, 1969) and Yasuzo Masumura's Blind Beast (盲獣, 1969), both based on the works of Edogawa Rampo. A more recent example of ero guro in cinema is Sion Sono's Strange Circus (奇妙なサーカス, 2005). more info |
Anyway, I'll try to watch this movie, it sounds pretty interesting, I'm curious! |

| Thank you Benten! I went back to my original article and confirmed my mistake...from what you've pointed out sounds as if they are reaching back into their history and bringing it back into the present. I know that best chemistry and I have both seen a good deal of "erotic-grotestque" films from Japan that have been released within the last 35-40 years. New term...but they are certainly harkening back to old times. Not that that is bad...I gravitate to this sort of cinema like bees to honey. |

| | a new term coinced. we have a few movies here who could fit in this category. the simple "extreme" mention is not accurate anymore to lump all these films together. I take notice of the term ero-guro for films containing extreme parts and some sex material or related. |

| Ok i just watched this movie. It's... wow.
Incroyable.

| Hello Lust,
I hope there was not too much spoilers previously wrote on this topic, as you will enjoy the movie as well as something special in japanese cinema.
we've seen this movie las week and honestly, I think that it's too dense to be seen only on one single pass. there are many subplots related, just as like there were in Suicide club. some of them are deliberately shown aiming to make you lose your way in the story. concerning the construction, there are many similarities with Suicide club. I won't say more.
concerning actresses performances, Strange circus is delightful. once can say these actresses were implicated in their own role at a level of 100%, leading a sensational female presence all long the movie. Masumi Miyazaki is really bursting the screen here, especially in the love scenes, where she was particularly convincing of realism.
to be honest, I've not been able to join all the parts yet, I fermly insist that you'll need to watch it several times because too much have been crypted in what the director finally carved on the release.
