| Operetta tanuki goten (2005)
Aka : Princess Raccoon
Realisateur : Seijun Suzuki
Cast : Zhang Ziyi || Joe Odagiri || Saori Yuki || Hiroko Yakushimaru || Mikijiro Hira || Misora Hibari
Musique : ?
Thème : Musical || romance
Synopsis : Amechiyo has been banished by his father for being too beautiful. Taken away by a ninja to Sacred Mountain they pass through a magical forest where they meet Princess Raccoon. The two fall in love and…not surprisingly; theirs is a forbidden love…one that is not well received by either family. A lot of grief and evil intent ensues. Love, death, regret and deception weave their intricate plot.
Mon avis : The opening lines set the stage for the film; “A man should not love a raccoon”. I must say, truer words were never spoken…Honestly, the plot doesn’t matter one bit. Seijun Suzuki is the old time master of the convoluted plot where colour, settings and imagery often speak louder than words…in fact, usually dialoge and timelines only confuse the viewer as one relies on such things for meaning and perspective…and of course Mr. Suzuki rarely pays attention to temporal flow, or cares a hoot for dialogue. Fortunately, our 80 year old director simplifies his craft a touch hear and words do indeed tell the tale…and it is a pretty straight forward one at that.
It’s a musical though, with random sprinklings of crafted sets woven between real life scenes. Seijun Suzuki is brazen and brilliant…audacious and loveable…the number of times during this film I just shook my head in disbelief at his quirk made my neck sore…Princess Raccoon is a brilliant film that is both simple and beautiful, complex in its presentation and riddled with outrageous intent.
I though Pistol Opera was his crowning achievement…but Princess Raccoon…well I’m just going to have to watch it a few more times.
I must give warning though…the film is weird, but once you fall into the director’s hypnotic fairyland…it’s a beautiful film to be enchanted by. Zhang Ziyi is wonderful, I have never seen her so radiant!
Tout public : : Oui

| Hello Prisoner,
I think I'll follow Eve's idea, how the hell haven't us found or heard about this movie before ? The divine Zhand Ziyi in a japanese movie, that's quite incredible.
I can see she got a full principal role as princess Raccoon and this is a musical comedy. no more words are needed. I want this movie !

| Hello lust, Zhang Ziyi is magic in this film...and I think it will be difficult to fault her performance. But I do caution everyone that it is a very unique film and anyone viewing it should suspend their preconcieved notions of what a film should be...of course you should do this with any Seijun Suzuki film. The good news is there is not sex, nudity or violence in the film...just a whole lot of singing, music and beautiful sets and constumes. Oh, and a storyline too |
