| Batoru rowaiaru (2000)
Aka : "Battle royale"
Realisateur : Kinji Fukasaku
Cast : Takeshi Kitano, Tatsuya Fujiwara, Aki Maeda, Taro Yamamoto, Masanobu Ando, Kou Shibasaki, Chiaki Kuriyama, Eri Ishikawa, Yuko Miyamura, Satomi Hanamura, Takayo Mimura, Anna Nagata... et bien d'autres

_________________ there's something in this world that's more painful than death, it's letting you go... i think i can get anything in this world if i had enough money but, i can't buy time.... should i ask you to wait until i can get into your heart! |

| rice, as long as the certification will be "not for persons under 18 years old", you will need to wait a while before watching this movie in US regular theaters.
take a look on this from wikipedia :
Status of distribution in North America
Despite rumors to the contrary, the film is not banned within the USA or North America; such a ban would be illegal under the first amendment to the United States Constitution. Rather, there has never been a distribution agreement due to the controversial nature of the film and reportedly unreasonable distribution terms specified by Toei, specifically the price of distribution being somewhere between 1-2 million dollars and that it must be a wide release on the order of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. (This, incidentally is not the first of Toei's controversial moves in regards to its properites and the western market.) These two stipulations put it outside of the range of most smaller movie distributors, and the larger distributors would not handle the film. Therefore, technically the film is not banned, but neither does a local distributor for it exist. It has been exhibited at film festivals in North America. Nonetheless, 'bootleg' copies of the film imported from China and Hong Kong have widespread availability on the continent, and a 'Special Edition DVD' of film was carried to a limited extent by retailers such as HMV in Canada and Tower Records in the United States; the legal status of this edition is not clear. Also, the film's UK distributor, Tartan Films, has released an all-region NTSC DVD version of the film that is available in North America from specialty outlets. One widely available Hong Kong import is a special edition that contains both films, although it lacks English subtitling.
nevermind this movie, there are dozens of beautiful other japaneses movies you could watch if you see some of them coming on your theaters. |

| What I do remember is watching this film one Thursday night, waking up the following morning and watching it again. Then, after thinking about the film the whole day I bought the novel that evening. Read the novel over the weekend and then watched the film again on Monday. This was back in 2002...periodically I will watch Battle Royale a couple times a year. I cannot tell you how often I cry when I see this film...strange as I can usually sit through anything. Here are a bunch of screen shots that I took from my latest viewing last Sunday.

| For those of you who just have to know all the facts...here is the class list from the novel. I believe the names are the same as from the film. One of my little goals is to take screenshots of every person listed here. It's a daunting task. The background image is the book cover.

| Hello Prisoner,
first point, thank you very much for this bright pictural addition. this was missing here for a monumental movie of this kind.
there are alot to talk about this movie, just having a look of all the other websites and some dediicated to this movie. last year I was disserting on another board last year about the girl's position (number) on the class picture. if Noriko (Aki Maeda) is in a logical situation, others are not droped randomly. 11 for Mitsuko (Kou Shibasaki), 13 for Takako (Chiaki Kuriyama) and 15 for Noriko. that's a serie in my humble opinion.

| This movie pretty much got me into japanese movies. It is an absolute cult classic. It is not as good as the manga though. The characters are all well developped in the manga, making each character's death more tragic.
My brother just received his order of the ultimate BAttle Royale Vol.1. A special edition reprint of the manga serie. First Volume collects the first three volumes of the original manga.
I never read the novel though. |
