Irma Vep (1996)
Aka :
Realisateur : Olivier Assayas
Cast : Maggie Cheung || Jean-Pierre Leaud || Nathalie Richard || Antoine Basler || Nathalie Boutefeu || Alex Descas || Dominique Faysse
Musique :
Thème : drame
Synopsis : Maggie Cheung, is hired by the eccentric French director René Vidal to portray Irma Vep (the character created by Musidora) in a remake of the silent movie "Vampires" (1916). The film follows Maggie as she attempts to navigate about Paris; her movie set as well as interacts with those around her…without knowing a word of French. Maggie is absolutely charming as she attempts to take on this ill-suited role. Although everyone involved in the film thinks she has been miscast, except for the director, she is loved and respected by all.
Mon avis : Maggie Cheung shines very bright in this wonderful film. Really, it’s all about Maggie as she plays herself in the film. Wonderfully directed, there is a lot happening regarding the relationships, the chaotic set and the zany director. Throughout, the film pokes fun at the pretentious film industry as well as the conflicting views that often arise between director and producer. The anchor to this intellectual romp is Maggie herself, and she is absolutely captivating with her English accent, and lovely smile. Highly, highly recommended.
As an aside, the director in the film is loosely based on, or a parody of the infamous Jean-Luc Godard.

Hello Flesh for fantasy,
Yes, this is French cinema
Not only that but it is supposed to be one of the last entries of French New Wave cinema. I do not know what that means unfortunately, but I can make a guess. The film is cute and entertaining on one level and quite subversive on another. I have watched it several times now and am certain that director Olivier Assayas is himself obsessed with the theme of disorientation and entropy; as plot, themes and Maggie begin to echoe each other and all share such attributes. Irma Vep is a superficially simple /slice of life(slice of film making film)...that offers way more if you want to look for it.
some added trivia *Assayas married Cheung in 1998. They divorced in 2001. They again collaborated in 2004 on the film Clean. *Irma Vep is an anagram for vampire.
